Hot Dog Flowers

Don’t say it with flowers! Say it with Ye Olde Oak! These fun puff pastry wrapped hot dogs will raise a smile for any occasion. They’re much easier than they look!

45 minutes

Some ingredients you’ll need…

  • 5 Ye Olde Oak hot dogs (1 560g can)
  • 600g of ready rolled room temperature puff pastry
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 bunch of spring onions
  • Sesame seeds OR Nigella seeds

  1. On a lightly floured surface, cut your sheets of room temperature puff pastry into 5 equally sized pieces. One edge of each piece should be the same length as your hot dogs. The other length should be able to encase your hot dog twice when rolled around.
  2. Place a hot dog on a piece of puff pastry and roll the pastry around it so it is fully encased twice over. Pinch it at the end so that no hot dog is visible.
  3. Repeat with the other hot dogs and pastry pieces. You should have 5 pastry 'tubes' at the end.
  4. With each rolled hot dog, carefully cut them into six equally sized pieces. This is easier if you cut them in half first, and then cut each half into three equally sized pieces. Make sure you use a sharp knife to get a clean cut.
  5. On a baking tray with grease proof paper, create your 5 flowers. Turn your slices on their side, so that the hot dog is visible in the centre of the pastry ring. For each hot dog, arrange 5 of the 6 slices around a single central 6th slice to form a flower shape. Lightly press them together but not too hard as they will expand in the oven.
  6. Once you have all your flowers created, brush beaten egg over all the pastry. This will also help the slices to hold together better. Lightly scatter some sesame or nigella seeds on the flowers. It's not essential but they will look pretty!
  7. Put your flowers in the oven at 190°C for around 25-30 minutes. Once out of the oven, allow to cool for 5 minutes on a heat proof surface. Eat and enjoy with your favourite mustard or ketchup!
  8. If you want to make your hot dog flowers a REAL showpiece, you could use a bunch of salad onions to create edible flower stems for your hot dog flowers to rest on.
